A surgeon will soon be performing a surgery inside a room on a soldier who is an aircraft or ship far away. Sounds fictious but this and much more can be achieved through “ Telepresence Technology”, being studied by researchers worldwide. According to a report, researchers at Sri International in the U.S. have successfully performed a series of remote surgical procedures on pigs. Besides French surgeons have also said they had pioneered groundbreaking open-heart surgery, using a remote controlled Robert to perform the delicate operation. A technique that a doctor says could result in less trauma and pain for the patient.
The surgeons motions, forces and field of view can be scaled down in microscopic anatomy with relative ease, other applications of tele medicine include sharing images (X-ray ultrasounds) and medical information for diagnosis, transmission of images of the heart to a remote consultant for real time diagnosis. a surgeon can practice on a virtual patient computer model created from patient specific medical image data .
